About Our Camp

On
Rochester's original Sons of Veterans Camp was Charles W. Canney Camp # 29,
which was organized in 1887. The camp was named after a 19 year old
The goal of Charles W. Canney Camp is to promote and preserve the memory of the
Civil War Veteran and to remember all those who help keep this country free.
Charles W. Canney Camp is very active doing school and organizational talks and
displays, memorials as well as researching Civil War Veterans.
On
August 20, 1954, by an act of the US Congress, the
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was declared the legal heir to the GAR.
The goal of this camp is to
preserve the memory of the Civil War Veteran and to pay honor to all those who
fought to keep us free.

On
August 14, 2004 at the 123rd National Encampment in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, Commander-in-Chief Kent Armstrong signed General Order #26. Item number two
on this order awarded the Abraham Lincoln Commander-in-Chief Award to Charles W.
Canney Camp #5. As stated in the order, the award is given to the “Most Outstanding Camp in the Nation.”
This is the first time this award has ever been awarded to a New Hampshire
camp!

Joining
Member (and Junior): A male descendant, whether through
lineal or collateral line and not less than 14 years of age (6 to 14 years for
Juniors), who: (1) is a blood relative of a Soldier, Sailor, Marine or member
of the Revenue Cutter Service, who was regularly mustered and served honorably
in, was honorably discharged from or died in the service of the Army, Navy,
Marine Corps or Revenue Cutter Service of the United States of America or in
such state regiments called to active service and was subject to orders of
United States general officers, between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865; (2)
has never been convicted of any infamous or heinous crime and (3) has, or whose
ancestor through whom membership is claimed has, never voluntarily borne arms
against the government of the United States.
Associate: Men who do not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary
membership, but who demonstrate a genuine interest in the Civil War and who can
subscribe to the purpose and objects of the SUVCW may become Associates. An
Associate may vote and hold any office except those of Commander-in-Chief,
Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief, Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, National
Secretary, National Treasurer and Commanding Officer of the Sons of Veterans
Reserve. Associates may not exceed one-third of the total membership of the
Camp at the time of election.

08, 2004, Company A of
the 12th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, Sons of Veterans Reserve,
received their SVR charter. The Sons of
Veterans Reserve is the uniformed and military arm of the Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War and is open to all SUVCW members in good standing.
